California C-12 Earthwork and Paving Exam

Free study guide and practice questions for the California CSLB C-12 Earthwork and Paving exam — grading and compaction, excavation, asphalt and concrete paving, ADA, OSHA trench safety, and construction stormwater, built from public OSHA standards, the California MUTCD, and Water Boards materials.

The C-12 Earthwork and Paving contractor digs, moves, and places the material that forms the surface of the earth — cut, fill, excavation, grading, trenching, and backfill — and mixes, fabricates, and places paving and other surfacing materials. Like every trade license, it requires passing this trade exam in addition to the Law & Business exam.

The CSLB exam outline weights the trade exam in four areas: Planning & Estimating (~20%), Earthwork & Grade Control (~29%), Paving (~30%), and Safety (~21%) — where “Safety” pulls in job-site safety, environmental (stormwater) impact, and traffic control. Earthwork and paving together are most of the exam, so the topics below put the most practice there.

The study material here is built from public, reusable sources: OSHA’s excavation standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P), the California MUTCD for work-zone traffic control, the State Water Board’s Construction General Permit for stormwater, and the federal ADA Standards for accessibility — plus standard civil-engineering fundamentals for grading, compaction, and paving. Work through the topics, then take a full timed practice exam.
